JUNEAU, Alaska — A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew medevaced a fisherman from the fishing vessel New Venture in the Shelikof Strait 95 miles west of Kodiak, Alaska, Wednesday.

The aircrew transported the New Venture crewmember, who was reportedly experiencing chest pain, to emergency medical personnel in Kodiak for further care.

Coast Guard 17th District command center watchstanders received the medevac request at approximately 12:20 p.m. and quickly directed the launch of the helicopter crew. The aircrew arrived on-scene at 1:25 p.m., safely hoisted the ailing mariner and returned to Kodiak at 2:50 p.m.

“Alaska’s general lack of infrastructure creates a dilemma for anyone suffering from serious medical problems while at sea,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Erik Ihle, a watchstander in the 17th District command center. “Coast Guard personnel train constantly to minimize response time during this type of maritime emergency.”
