Study challenges MSC's 'sustainable' seafood certification
WORLDWIDE
Tuesday, April 16, 2013, 04:10 (GMT + 9)
Researchers now believe that the certification of seafood as “sustainable” by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is both too lax and too misleading. “When consumers want sustainable fish there are two options to meet the demand: fisheries can become more sustainable or the definition of sustainable can be watered down to be practically meaningless—with MSC seafood, the definition has been repeatedly watered down,” says Jennifer Jacquet, a clinical assistant professor in New York University’s (NYU) Environmental Studies Programme and one of 11..... http://www.fis.com/fis/worldnews/worldnews.asp?l=e&country=0&special=&monthyear=&day=&id=60162&ndb=1&df=0

China strengthens ties with Iceland as part of interest in warming Arctic
Peter Ford
The Christian Science Monitor
April 15, 2013
It is clear why Iceland is interested in China: the Arctic nation’s prime minister is currently in Beijing to sign a free trade agreement that will boost Icelandic fish exports more than somewhat. But why is China so interested in Iceland? Perhaps because the Arctic is shaping up to be one of the world’s future hotspots, as the melting icecap reveals a potential treasure trove of natural resources and clears new shipping routes. “China has an interest in the region and it wants to be part of the Arctic game,” says Geir Flikke, an.... http://www.alaskadispatch.com/article/20130415/china-strengthens-ties-iceland-part-interest-warming-arctic
Will melting Arctic open up LNG (seafood) shipping lanes?
Jill Burke
April 14, 2013
As Alaska continues to struggle with jumpstarting construction on a massive natural gas pipeline project, Russia is marching ahead with plans to tap its own Arctic gas reserves. But unlike Alaska, which is pinning its hopes on an 800-mile-long pipeline and terminal project that could cost more than $65 billion, Russia’s effort would involve icebreaker tankers transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Arctic’s ice-clogged waters. In the Arctic, both Russia and Alaska hold trillions of cubic feet of natural gas. The theory has long been that pipelines would be needed to get the gas to markets. But with Arctic warming, shipping.... http://www.alaskadispatch.com/article/20130414/will-melting-arctic-open-lng-shipping-lanes

Kodiak herring season begins; ISA bug back at Chile

April 16, 2013
Kodiak’s herring season got underway yesterday, and the bust at Sitka has re-energized the fishery again this year. No boat counts yet, but it’s expected to top the 30 or so from 2012, compared to just 17 in previous seasons. Unlike other Alaska regions where roe herring fisheries can be over in a few short openers, Kodiak openers can occur in up to 81 sections around the island, and.... http://www.alaskafishradio.com/kodiak-herring-season-begins-isa-bug-back-at-chile/

Today I join a delegation headed to London to deliver a message to the new CEOs of Anglo American and Rio Tinto and the companies’ shareholders.
