Parnell must do right thing for Alaska's salmon habitat
Rob Ernst
August 10, 2013
At the end of July, the Parnell administration ruled a wild salmon stream in Cook Inlet was “suitable” for large-scale coal strip mining. You read that right. In response to a petition from local Alaskans looking to protect salmon habitat from the proposed Chuitna coal strip mine, the Parnell Administration said “no.” This wasn’t an attempt to stop the coal mine; it simply asked the governor to prevent mining through salmon streams. For most Alaskans, that’s a no-brainer. In his run for office, Gov. Parnell promised Alaskans on numerous occasions he’d “never trade one resource for another.” At the time, I..... http://www.alaskadispatch.com/article/20130810/parnell-must-do-right-thing-alaskas-salmon-habitat

New effort to bring Native foods to plates across Alaska
Suzanna Caldwell
August 11, 2013
For years, leaders in the Alaska Native community have tried to negotiate with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for permission to serve traditional foods to those who need them most. Now a bill from U.S. Sen. Mark Begich aims to eliminate the red tape involved with serving traditional foods in programs in Alaska and across the nation. “The Traditional Foods Nourishment Act of 2013” would make it easier to serve Alaska Native foods in facilities like hospitals, schools, childcare and eldercare facilities. While some Native foods are already served in parts of Alaska -- several school districts have popular fish-to-school programs -- it’s been a struggle to incorporate more traditional foods in programs..... http://www.alaskadispatch.com/article/20130811/new-effort-bring-native-foods-plates-across-alaska

2 accused of illegally selling caviar, steelhead, salmon
State agents believe the men have connections to an international poaching ring.
By Diana Hefley, Herald Writer
EVERETT -- An undercover operation in Snohomish County by state fish and wildlife agents has netted two men with suspected ties to an international fish-poaching ring. The men are accused of illegally selling caviar, steelhead and salmon. One of the men admitted to illegally "snagging" at least 100 pounds of steelhead, prosecutors said. The men were charged on Tuesday with unlawful trafficking of fish, a felony. "It's bad enough when they're stealing by harvesting illegally. They've added to the egregiousness by then making a profit," said Mike Cenci, a marine patrol captain with the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. Agents say the men are believed to be connected to a fish-poaching ring that was operating out of several other states. Earlier this year, eight men were indicted in Missouri on federal charges for poaching and trafficking.... http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20130804/NEWS01/708049963
Farmers sue over water for Klamath salmon
FRESNO -- Farmers in California's San Joaquin Valley are suing the federal government over the planned release of water from a Northern California reservoir to prevent a salmon kill in the lower Klamath River. The suit alleges the release from the Trinity Reservoir would be unlawful and would further decrease the little water available to farmers for irrigation. It was filed Wednesday by the Westlands Water District and the San Luis & Delta-Mendota Water Authority against the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Baltimore researchers turn carnivorous fish into vegetarians
By Darryl Fears, Published: August 11
Cobia is a sleek and powerful fish that devours flesh and doesn’t apologize for it. Open its belly and anything might pop out — crab, squid, smaller fish, you name it. Recently, three Baltimore researchers — Aaron Watson, Frederic Barrows and Allen Place — set out to tame this wild and hungry fish sometimes called black salmon. They didn’t want to simply domesticate it; hundreds of fish farmers have already done that. They sought to turn one of the ocean’s greediest carnivores into a vegetarian. The researchers announced last week that they pulled off the feat at a laboratory in the Columbus Center in downtown Baltimore. Over the course of a four-year study, Watson said, they dabbled with mixtures of plant-based proteins, fatty acids and a powerful amino acid-like substance found in energy drinks until they came up with a combination that cobia and another popular farm fish, gilt-head bream, gobbled down. The conversion of these carnivorous fish to ....... http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/baltimore-researchers-turn-carnivorous-fish-into-vegetarians/2013/08/11/46fc967e-0130-11e3-9711-3708310f6f4d_story.html
