Bethel Group Wants Board Of Fish To Take A Closer Look At Kuskokwim Kings
By Angela Denning-Barnes, KYUK - Bethel | September 18, 2013 - 5:31 pm
The Alaska Board of Fish has a work session planned for October 9-11 in Girdwood. And although it’s not on the agenda to talk about Kuskokwim Chinook salmon, that’s just what several local groups want the board to do. The Bering Sea Fisherman’s Association and local tribes want the Board of Fish to take up the Kuskokwim King salmon run out of cycle. The fisherman’s association submitted an agenda change request out of a conservation concern for the run. In it, the.... http://www.alaskapublic.org/2013/09/18/bethel-group-wants-board-of-fish-to-take-a-closer-look-at-kuskokwim-kings/
Legislation addresses seafood sustainability issues

Legislation introduced by Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska on Sept. 18 would prohibit federal agencies from using certification schemes when considering or labeling any domestic seafood catch as sustainable. "It is bad federal policy to allow third party certifiers, including foreign non-governmental organizations, to decide what seafood is allowed to be sold in national parks, or procured by federal agencies, Murkowski said. http://www.thecordovatimes.com/article/1338legislation-addresses-seafood-sustainability

The National Marine Fisheries Service is still taking a wait-and-see approach to Petersburg’s sea lion problem in the harbors. A NMFS official from Juneau made a brief trip to the community last week to check out the docks and meet with locals about the issue. The borough, this summer, asked the agency to remove at least one large sea lion in the name of public safety. Despite the visit, NMFS is still not ready to take that step. So, Petersburg will continue pursuing non-lethal measures to deal with the situation. Matt Lichtenstein has an update: “We don’t want anybody getting hurt and I understand that it can be a scary situation for folks and we want to try to work with the community to find a good solution,” says NMFS Assistant Regional Administrator for Protected Resources..... http://www.kfsk.org/2013/09/18/nmfs-official-gets-closer-look-at-towns-sea-lion-problem-agency-sticks-with-wait-and-see-approach/

Backers of Bristol Bay Forever Initiative Say It’s a Go
Petitioners gathering signatures to put the Bristol Bay Forever Initiative on the Alaska statewide ballot in August 2014 say they now have more than enough signers who are registered voters but they haven’t stopped yet. As of Sept. 13, support for the initiative to protect wild salmon and waters within the Bristol Bay Fisheries Reserve had reached 30,169 signatures, according to Art Hackney, owner of an Anchorage communications firm, who is overseeing the petition drive. The initiative, if approved in a statewide election next Aug. 19, would require legislative approval for certain large scale mines, in addition to permits and authorizations otherwise.... http://fnonlinenews.blogspot.com/2013/09/backers-of-bristol-bay-forever.html
NJ: The Environmental Promise of Open Ocean Fish Farms
By Mel Fabrikant Wednesday, September 18, 2013, 11:01 AM EDT
Innovative submersible fish pens and new developments in fish food may change the way "fish farming" is conducted throughout the world. Sustainable aquaculture is possible, say some innovative practitioners -- and open ocean fish farms may be the solution to a whole range of environmental problems. These are not the crowded, close-to-shore pens where fish are trapped like caged chickens, requiring doses of antibiotics that leak, along with the concentrated wastes, into surrounding waters. They are submersible net pens, more than 150 feet apart, where...... http://www.paramuspost.com/article.php/20130918110127248
Japan PM wants Fukushima plant entirely scrapped
MARI YAMAGUCHI 45 minutes ago
OKUMA, Japan (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe ordered the operator of the country's crippled nuclear power plant on Thursday to scrap all six reactors at the site instead of just four already slated for decommissioning and to concentrate on tackling pressing issues like leaks of radioactive water. After taking a firsthand look at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, however, Abe insisted that radioactive water had been contained at the complex and said he would fend off "rumors" regarding Fukushima's safety. Following a three-hour tour of the plant, Abe instructed its operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., to decommission the No. 5 and 6 reactors, which survived the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The disaster caused three other.... http://news.yahoo.com/japan-pm-wants-fukushima-plant-entirely-scrapped-113851396.html
