Alaska's Salmon Fisheries are One Step Closer to MSC Certification

Another step has been taken towards getting Alaska’s commercial salmon fisheries recertified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council. Last fall the MSC sustainability certification of Alaska’s commercial salmon fisheries was allowed to lapse after most of the major seafood processors that operate in the state pulled their support. However, the Purse Seine Vessel Owners Association stepped up to serve as the client for getting the fisheries re-certified.....

The U.S. is setting the standard for ecologically sustainable longline fishing. Now it's time to make sure the rest of the world gets onboard. By Ted Williams Published: September-October 2013 In 1991 the United States banned large pelagic driftnets because of the enormous "bycatch" of seabirds, sea turtles, marine mammals, and non-target fish. So commercial fishermen began switching to longlining. Gear can consist of up to 55 miles of main line with 1,400 600-foot branch lines from which dangle thousands of baited hooks. Bycatch remained horrendous. By 2003 longliners from 40 nations were killing at least 300,000 seabirds (including 22 endangered species) and countless billfish and sharks. The United States is the world leader in innovations to reduce longlining bycatch of birds, but we haven't come nearly as far with protections for non-target fish and sea turtles. Alaska lawmakers accused the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service of violating federal law by shutting down hunting on its lands during the government shutdown, saying a 1980 law guarantees state residents must have access to the land. “It seems that agencies are working harder to keep people off federal lands than they have ever worked before to get them to visit federal lands,” said Sen. The Coast Guard Rescues an Injured Crewman from a Bulk Carrier in the Bering Sea
An injured crewman was successfully medevaced Monday from the bulk carrier Anne Mette in the Bering Sea. A Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak met the Anne Mette about 200 miles southwest of Adak and hoisted the injured crewman aboard.....

First offshore aquaculture farm awaiting federal approval

The first oceanic aquaculture farm could come true if a venture to produce mussels in 30 acres (12.4 hectares) of water under federal jurisdiction is approved. The new farm would be installed in Nantucket Sound, next to the area rented by the marine wind farm Cape Wind on Horseshoe Shoal. It is a venture which has been needed in the area for a long time, given that 90 per cent of the mussels consumed in the United States is imported from other countries....

The environmental non-governmental group  Greenpeace  has published  statements and  video  showing its activists aboard two ships that are attempting to "interfere" with oil exploration going on in the Davis Strait, 100 miles west of Greenland. This business has in turn prompted the Kingdom of Denmark to launch two ships and a few helicopters to monitor the Greenpeace interference.
