Market Fresh: King crab for Turkey DayBY STEVE EDWARDS
Daily News correspondent
November 26, 2013 Updated 12 hours ago
Sure, Thursday is a big turkey day, but we're Alaskans. We pick fins over feathers and local over flown-in any day. So think differently. And Alaska's cold waters are producing. "Finally got in this season's red king crab in and the rumors that we initially heard on the product were true -- big, bright and full of meat," says John Jackson of New Sagaya Markets. "So here it is first of the season... http://www.adn.com/2013/11/26/3199751/market-fresh-king-crab-hits-alaska.html
Alaska salmon management: A unique process for a unique state
BY MOLLY DISCHNER, ALASKA JOURNAL OF COMMERCE
Published: 2013.11.26 04:21 PM
Editor’s note: this is the fifth in the Morris Communications series “The case for conserving the Kenai king salmon.” For a young state, Alaska has a long history with fisheries management. Alaska’s desire to manage fisheries, and salmon in particular, was a driving force during the push for statehood, and more than a century before that, the commercial fishing industry was a major component of the United States purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1857. For thousands of years, Alaskans have traveled to the ocean and rivers to catch.... http://www.alaskajournal.com/Alaska-Journal-of-Commerce/December-Issue-1-2013/Alaska-salmon-management-A-unique-process-for-a-unique-state/
Strong Cook Inlet sockeye run of 6.1M forecast for 2014
BY MOLLY DISCHNER, ALASKA JOURNAL OF COMMERCE
Published: 2013.11.26 04:21 PM
Upper Cook Inlet could see another strong year for sockeye returns if the 2014 forecast for 6.1 million fish comes to fruition. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game released its 2014 forecast Nov. 19, which predicts a run of between 4.4 million to 7.8 million sockeye, or red, salmon. That would be an above average return for the region. At the 6.1 million fish level, ADFG expects a total harvest of 4.3 million fish for all user groups, and an escapement of 1.8 million sockeyes to all rivers, mainly the Kenai. Sockeye bound for Upper Cook Inlet rivers are caught in sport, personal use, subsistence and commercial fisheries, and managers are tasked with offering opportunity to those... http://www.alaskajournal.com/Alaska-Journal-of-Commerce/December-Issue-1-2013/Strong-Cook-Inlet-sockeye-run-of-61M-forecast-for-2014/
GMO salmon criticisms 'don't merit comment'
Genetically modified salmon facility highly scrutinized, says company CEO
CBC News Posted: Nov 27, 2013 7:43 AM AT Last Updated: Nov 27, 2013 8:18 AM AT
The CEO of an American company producing genetically modified salmon eggs in eastern Prince Edward Island is brushing off criticism from anti-GMO groups. AquaBounty announced this week it had received approval from Environment Canada to produce the eggs on a commercial scale. It had been operating as a research facility. Critics have complained the Canadian government's approval of its hatchery in Bay Fortune, P.E.I., was done in secret without public.... http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/gmo-salmon-criticisms-don-t-merit-comment-1.2441704
Board of Fisheries rescinds new Atka mackerel fishery
BY MOLLY DISCHNER
Published: 2013.11.26 03:54 PM
Alaska’s Board of Fisheries voted 7-0 today to rescind the action it took in October to create a new Atka mackerel fishery near Adak. Fisherman Dan Veerhusen had requested the new purse seine fishery, which the board agreed to as a way to provide more fishing opportunity in the region. That occurred at the Board of Fisheries’ October Pacific cod meeting in Anchorage. But the Adak Community Development Corp. petitioned the board Nov. 6 to take that back and not allow the new fishery after all. In rescinding the action during an emergency teleconference Nov. 26, the board agreed.... http://www.alaskajournal.com/Blog-Fish-Bytes/Blogs-2013/Board-of-Fisheries-rescinds-new-Atka-mackerel-fishery/
